another figure piece
April 24, 2008 on 8:33 pm | Written by: casey | In Uncategorized | 1 CommentThis piece consists of multiple plaster figures. The figures have been dipped in shellac, clear medium, and blue paint. The are sitting on a four foot long white stand with a tile top. The figures are close to the floor, which makes the viewer move closer to inspect them. The figures are arranged randomly, but there are still different lines evident in different areas of the work.
to-do
April 24, 2008 on 7:38 pm | Written by: casey | In Uncategorized | No CommentsThis piece is compiled of actual to-do lists that were kept for two months. Each list has been glued to one another to make a long chain of to-do lists. The lists were then rolled up and hung from the ceiling. This piece is completely about the lists. The viewers are encouraged to look closely at the lists and the become a part of the life of the list maker.
Another untitled wallpiece
April 24, 2008 on 7:09 pm | Written by: casey | In Uncategorized | 2 CommentsThis piece is made out of two different types of window blinds hanging from a piece of wood. It hangs vertically from the wall, close to the ceiling. It is not evident that the piece is made out of blinds, which leads the viewer to wonder what it is actually made of. Also, the number of blinds clumped together makes it even harder to distinguish the materials. The piece has no meaning that can be easily determined by the viewer. It is meant to be looked at for its quietness and elegance.
repetition
April 15, 2008 on 2:39 pm | Written by: casey | In Uncategorized | No CommentsIt has been pointed out that I like multiples and repetition, I seem to use them in every piece I do, whether or not I intend to. Now I just have to figure out why I like them and what I learn from using them. I have a lot to think about.
the latest critique
April 15, 2008 on 2:38 pm | Written by: casey | In Uncategorized | No CommentsWe finally critiqued my last piece in class, and I got a really good critique. The comments were very helpful. I agree that the particular wall it is on, between the two door frames, is not the best spot, I just don’t know where else I would put it right now. I also don’t like the shape that the pieces have been arranged in, so I would like to figure out a new way to show them. Also, I really like the idea of a controlled line of paint on each one to connect them all. So now we will see what I can do with them!

Dan Flavin is also an artist I have been familiar with since high school, I saw his work in the National Gallery in D.C. He uses commercially available flourescent light fixtures to create interesting and brightly colored sculptures.

Christo is another artist I am extremely excited by and have been since high school, when I got the chance to go to New York to see the Gates. I think it is really exciting that he goes into the outdoors and uses cloth often to cover or surround something that already exists.

Xu Bing is a Chinese born artist who was trained in printmaking and now works with sculpture and digital methods. I am looking at the first piece as I am beginning my next sculpture. I like the simplicity of the piece hanging from the ceiling without lots of distracting elements and colors.
